You can schedule Facebook posts to a Page, and you can do it two ways: inside Meta Business Suite, or through a scheduling tool that uses Meta's API. You cannot schedule to a personal profile or to a group with a tool. Meta's API publishes to Pages and has no endpoint for profiles, and it removed its Groups API on 22 April 2024. Anything that claims otherwise is either a reminder that pings your phone or a browser trick that breaks the rules.
That is the short answer. The rest of this page shows what each destination allows, how to schedule a Page post step by step, what a post can carry, why a scheduled post sometimes does not go out, and what to do for profiles and groups. It was checked against Meta's documentation and Preflight's code on 8 October 2026.
What you can and cannot schedule
| Where | Native (Meta Business Suite) | Through a tool's API | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Page, feed post | Yes | Yes | The one destination that works everywhere. Admin or editor role needed. |
| Personal profile | Not in Business Suite. Possibly in the Facebook app if the profile is in professional mode, mobile only | No | The API has no profile endpoint. Native option below is unverified by us. |
| Group | Group admins may see a schedule option in the app; we could not verify it | No | publish_to_groups was removed on 22 April 2024. |
| Instagram account linked to the Page | Yes, in Business Suite | Yes, as a separate connection | See Instagram scheduling. |
| Page story | Yes, according to Meta's guides | Publish yes, a story carries no caption | A story expires after 24 hours. |
| Page Reel | Offered in Business Suite's Create menu | Yes, vertical video of 3 to 90 seconds | Limits for the native route not verified by us. |
Two lines of that table carry the whole topic. The Page row is the only one with a real answer for every tool. The profile and group rows are not a gap in any one product: they are a limit of what Meta exposes.
Schedule a Page post, step by step
This is how it works in Preflight. The Page is a channel, the post goes into a queue or onto a fixed time, and nothing is sent until that time.
- Connect the Page. Log in with the Facebook account that manages the Page and tick the Page on Meta's consent screen. The account needs a role that can create, manage and moderate content. Preflight stores the Page's own access token, not your personal one. Details and the permission list are on the Facebook integration page.
- Write the post. Text up to 63,206 characters, with an optional link. Facebook shows a link preview for a link post.
- Add media if you want it. One picture, an album of up to ten, one video, or a Reel. Add alt text to each picture.
- Choose Reel or story if that is what you are making. A Reel is one vertical video. A story is one picture or one video and takes no caption.
- Add a first comment. Optional. It is posted under the post straight after it goes out, which is the usual place for hashtags or a link.
- Pick the time. A fixed date and time, or the next free slot in the channel's queue. The time is shown in the workspace time zone, so check the zone before you confirm.
- Read the checks. The composer measures the file against Facebook's rules before you schedule: a landscape Reel, a video outside 3 to 90 seconds, a picture over 10 MB or a video mixed with pictures is flagged with the measured value, not a vague error.
- Schedule. The post appears in the calendar. It can be moved, edited or cancelled until it leaves. Pages are included on every plan; see pricing.
The same job in Meta Business Suite
If you only run one Page and want no extra tool, Business Suite is free and built for this. Per Meta's help pages, you open the Planner (the calendar), choose Create post, write the post and add media, open the scheduling option, pick a date and time, and confirm. You need admin or editor access to the Page. Its menus change often, so if a label differs from this text, look for the date and time option under the Create post button. Meta's own walk-through is at Schedule a post and manage scheduled posts for your Facebook Page.
Where a Preflight post actually waits
This part trips people up. Facebook has its own scheduled-post field: according to Meta's Pages API documentation, a post created unpublished with a scheduled_publish_time must go out between 10 minutes and 30 days after the request. Preflight does not use it. The code never sets that field. A Preflight post is held on Preflight's own clock and sent to Facebook at the chosen minute.
What that means for you:
- The post is not in Facebook's scheduled-posts list. Open Business Suite before the time and you will not see it there. It is in Preflight's calendar and queue.
- No 10 minute minimum, no 30 day maximum. You can schedule next year, and change your mind about a post an hour before it goes.
- One behaviour for every network. Moving, cancelling and retrying work the same for Facebook as for the other channels.
- Preflight has to be running at the time. A natively scheduled post sits on Meta's servers and goes out even if a tool is down. A Preflight post depends on Preflight and on your connection still being valid at that minute. That is the trade, and it is why the checks below matter.
- Time zones come from the workspace. Facebook receives a publish now call at the right moment, so there is no time zone conversion on Facebook's side to get wrong.
What a Facebook post can carry
The limits below are what Preflight enforces for Pages, taken from the code and Meta's documentation. The full table for every network is at limits.
- Text. 63,206 characters. Few people come near it; a post that long is not read.
- Link. One link, attached as a link post with Facebook's preview.
- Pictures. One, or an album of up to ten. JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP or TIFF, up to 10 MB each, with alt text.
- Video. One video, up to 240 minutes and 10 GB. Facebook pulls it from a signed address, so it is not pushed through the app.
- Reel. One vertical video, 3 to 90 seconds, at least 540 by 960 pixels, 24 to 60 frames per second. A Page can post about 30 Reels a day from one app.
- Story. One picture or one video, no caption. A story video is 3 to 60 seconds and up to 100 MB.
- First comment. Posted after the post goes out.
Pictures and a video cannot share a post. Facebook has no such post, so Preflight keeps the first file and the composer warns you before you schedule. After publishing, text on a feed post can be edited, a photo post cannot, and a story cannot be deleted through the API.
Why a scheduled post can fail
Most failures come down to four causes, each one an error Meta returns and Preflight's code handles.
- The access token expired or was revoked. Meta answers with error code 190. Changing your Facebook password, removing the app or losing your role on the Page does it. Preflight marks the connection as needing a reconnect and does not retry, because a retry cannot help.
- A permission is missing. Error codes 200 and 10 mean the token lacks one of the permissions the post needs, often because a box was left unticked on the consent screen. Reconnect and tick everything.
- Meta rejected the content. Error code 100 is a bad argument: a file in an unsupported format, a Reel that is too short, a link Meta refuses. Preflight marks it permanent and shows Meta's message.
- Meta is rate limiting the Page. Codes 4, 17, 32 and 613 are rate limits. Preflight waits about 30 minutes and tries again, up to eight times, because the limit is measured over an hour.
Meta's rules on spam and automated activity apply to a scheduled post as to any other; they are summarised on the Facebook integration page.
Personal profiles and groups: what to do instead
Personal profile. No tool can post to one. What exists:
- Use a Page. If the posts are for a business, a brand or a public presence, a Page is the thing built for scheduling, and the only thing every tool can reach.
- Check for a native option in the app. Meta's help pages describe scheduling from the Facebook mobile app for a profile in professional mode. We could not open Meta's own article to confirm the steps, so look for a schedule choice in Post settings in your own app. If it is not there, your profile does not have it.
- Use a reminder. Some tools write the post ahead of time and notify your phone at the right moment so you paste and publish it yourself. That is a reminder, not scheduling, and it does not post if you ignore it.
Group. Since 22 April 2024, Meta's Groups API and its publish_to_groups permission are gone, which Meta announced in its v19.0 changelog. No third-party scheduler can post to a group any more. If you administer a group, look at the group's own composer for a schedule option, and otherwise set a calendar reminder and post by hand. One more route: post from the Page and share it into the group manually when it is live.
Instagram is a separate case with its own rules; the Instagram side of a linked account is covered in how to schedule Instagram posts.
Questions people ask
- Can you schedule Facebook posts on a personal profile?
- Not through a scheduling tool. Meta's API publishes to Pages and has no endpoint for personal profiles, so tools can only post to a Page. Meta's help pages describe a native schedule option in the Facebook mobile app for profiles in professional mode; look in Post settings in your app to see whether you have it.
- Can you schedule a post in a Facebook group?
- Not with a third-party tool. Meta removed its Groups API and the publish_to_groups permission on 22 April 2024. Group admins may find a schedule option in the group's own composer, otherwise post by hand or use a calendar reminder.
- How far ahead can you schedule a Facebook post?
- In Meta's API a natively scheduled Page post must be between 10 minutes and 30 days ahead. Preflight does not use that field and holds the post on its own clock, so it can be scheduled further out, as long as the Page connection is still valid when the time comes.
- Can you schedule Facebook Reels?
- Yes, to a Page. Preflight sends one vertical video of 3 to 90 seconds, at least 540 by 960 pixels and 24 to 60 frames per second, and checks those numbers before you schedule. Meta Business Suite also offers Reels in its Create menu.
- Why did my scheduled Facebook post not publish?
- The usual causes are an expired Page token (error 190), a missing permission (200 or 10), a file Meta rejected (100) or a rate limit on the Page. Reconnect the Page first, then read the error message on the post; Preflight retries rate limits about every 30 minutes and does not retry the others.
