Hootsuite alternatives for small teams (2026 prices)

Hootsuite starts at $99 a month per user. Cheaper schedulers that still cover ten networks, approvals and analytics, with October 2026 prices and what each one lacks.

Updated · Prices and limits checked against the vendors' own pages and APIs on that date.

Hootsuite's Standard plan is $99 a month per user on yearly billing, and the monthly price is higher. For a company with a social media department that is a rounding error. For a two-person studio running six clients it is the biggest line on the software bill, and most of what it pays for (listening, a unified inbox, enterprise permissions, "Wisdom", the AI agent launched in June 2026) is not what a small team logs in for.

What a small team logs in for is a calendar, a queue, a client who can approve a post without an account, a monthly report, and the certainty that the thing goes out. This page lists the tools that do that for a fraction of the price, and what each one lacks against Hootsuite.

Every plan is per user. A second seat on Standard is a second $99. There is no free plan and a 14-day trial with posting caps.

Six alternatives for a small team

The column that matters most for a team is seats: who else can log in, and whether a client can approve without one.

    The honest gaps against Hootsuite

Listening and the inbox. Hootsuite's inbox pulls DMs, mentions and comments from every network into one queue, and Talkwalker-grade listening is bolted on. None of the tools above do listening; most do comments. Preflight reads and answers comments on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon, and does nothing with DMs, on purpose.

Enterprise permissions and SSO. Hootsuite has them; the small tools have owner, admin and member and nothing finer. If you need SAML, you need Hootsuite, Sprout or Sendible.

Mobile. Hootsuite's app is good. Of the tools above, Buffer and Publer have native apps of the same standard; Metricool's is weak; Preflight and Postiz are web apps (Preflight installs to the home screen and uploads over mobile data with retries, which is the part that usually breaks).

    X. Hootsuite includes X. Since X's API went pay-per-use in 2026 ($0.015 a post, $0.20 for a post with a link, billed to the tool), small tools either charge for it or limit it. Preflight's X is text-only today.

What the small tools do better

    • Approval links instead of client seats. On Preflight a client gets a link, sees the post as it will look on each network, and approves or asks for changes without creating an account. Kontentino does this best of all, and charges €149 for it.
    • Checking before publishing. Hootsuite tells you a post failed. Preflight tells you it will fail, while you are typing: the 30-hashtag limit on Instagram, the 500-byte limit on Threads, the frame-rate window on TikTok. See every network's limits.
    • Community networks. Discord, Telegram, Mastodon and Bluesky are afterthoughts or absent on Hootsuite (Bluesky arrived in 2026, single posts only). Preflight and Postiz treat them as real networks: Discord webhooks with forum threads, Telegram albums and silent posts, Mastodon content warnings and per-instance limits.
    • Price per seat. A ten-person Studio on Preflight costs $64 for everyone. Ten Hootsuite Standard seats cost $990.

    Picking one

    • Agency with clients who approve everything: Kontentino if the budget allows €149, Preflight Pro at $24 if it does not.
    • Analytics-first: Metricool.
    • Developers, or a team that wants an assistant to do the posting: Preflight or Postiz, both with REST and MCP.
    • You need listening or SAML: stay with Hootsuite, or look at Sprout Social and Sendible rather than at this page.

    Questions people ask

Is there a free Hootsuite alternative?
Buffer, Publer, Metricool and Preflight each have a free plan with three channels or one brand. None gives client approvals for free; Preflight's approval links start on Pro at $24.
What is the cheapest Hootsuite alternative with client approvals?
Postiz Team at $39 and Preflight Pro at $24 both include approvals with API access. Kontentino's approvals, the best in the category, start at €149 a month.
Does any cheap scheduler do social listening?
No. Listening is why Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Brandwatch cost what they do. The tools on this page do comments at most.
