Buffer has been scheduling posts since 2010 and most of what it does, it does well. Preflight is a year old. This page is for someone choosing between the two, so it says plainly where Buffer is ahead, and where the newer tool is.

Where Buffer is ahead
- API and MCP for nothing. A Buffer free account gets an API key with 3,000 requests a month and the MCP server. Preflight's API and MCP start on Pro at $24.
- X with media. Buffer includes X and absorbs its API fees. Preflight posts text to X only, and X is not switched on for new accounts while the per-post pricing is decided.
- LinkedIn Company Pages, Google Business Profile, Substack Notes. Preflight does personal LinkedIn profiles today; Pages wait on LinkedIn's review. It has no Google Business or Substack.
- Native apps. Buffer's apps are mature and well reviewed.
- Fifteen years of edges smoothed. Link shortening, a browser extension, Canva and more integrations, ideas board, a mature help centre.
Where Preflight is ahead
- Price. At eight channels Buffer costs about 3.7 times as much; at twenty with three seats, about eight times.
- It checks first. Preflight runs each network's rules on the post while you type: Instagram's 30 hashtags, 20 mentions, JPEG-only pictures between 4:5 and 1.91:1; TikTok's 23 to 60 fps and 360 to 4,096 pixels; Threads' 500 bytes and five links; YouTube's 5,000 bytes and the "under 15 hashtags or none count" rule. The composer refuses or warns before anything is uploaded. Buffer counts characters and reports the network's error afterwards. The full list is on the limits page.
- Community networks. Discord (webhook, username and avatar, forum threads, silent) and Telegram (bot, albums, silent, pin, protect, spoiler), plus Tumblr. Buffer has none of the three.
- Big video. Uploads up to 2 GB in parts that resume after a dropped connection, and YouTube videos handed to YouTube ahead of time so YouTube itself publishes at the minute.
- Approvals without accounts. A client opens a link, sees the post as each network will show it, approves or asks for changes. One decision per link, so a late change cannot land on an approved post.
- Per-channel posting times in three tiers: the channel's own, its network's, the workspace default.
- EU hosting, for teams that have to say where the data is.
What they share
Both have a free plan, a queue, a calendar you can drag in, drafts, first comments on Instagram and Facebook, per-network caption variants, alt text, hashtag groups, a comments inbox and CSV import. Both have an MCP server; Preflight's adds validate_post and requires an explicit confirmation before an assistant publishes immediately.
Who should choose which
Choose Buffer if you need X with media today, LinkedIn Company Pages, Substack Notes, a native app, or an API on a free plan.
Choose Preflight if you run eight channels or more and want a flat bill, if Discord or Telegram are part of your audience, if you post video and have been burned by an upload that failed at 2 a.m., or if you want posts checked before they leave rather than explained after they fail.

Questions people ask
- Is Preflight cheaper than Buffer?
- At eight channels: $13 against $48 a month. At three channels both are free. Buffer's free plan includes API access and Preflight's does not.
- Does Buffer post to Discord or Telegram?
- No. Preflight does, with the options those networks have: webhook identity and forum threads on Discord, albums and silent posts on Telegram.
- Can I use both?
- Yes; nothing stops two tools posting to the same accounts, though each will see only its own posts in analytics. Most people run both for a week, then cancel one.
