How to schedule Pinterest pins: boards and limits

Pinterest has no publish-at field in its API, so a scheduler holds the pin. Boards, 100 and 800 characters, Trial vs Standard access and what a tool cannot do.

Pinterest lets a business account schedule pins in its own tool, so the question is not whether it can be done but what a scheduler adds. The answer is the same caption, link and alt text travelling to the other networks in one step, a client's approval before the pin goes out, and scheduling from an API or an AI assistant. The part worth knowing is how it works underneath: Pinterest's API has no field for a future publish time, so a scheduler holds the pin itself and publishes it at the moment you chose. This page shows what a pin can hold, why a board is required, and the access rules that decide whether pins are visible to anyone.

    What a pin holds

A pin created through the API is one picture and a few fields.

    Limit
PictureOne image, JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP or TIFF, up to 20 MB
Title100 characters; Pinterest shows the first 100
    Description800 characters
    Alt text500 characters
    LinkOne destination link
BoardRequired: a pin without a valid board is refused
VideoPossible in the API with a separate media upload; Preflight does not send video to Pinterest
Several images in one pinPossible in the API; Preflight sends the first picture only and warns about the rest

In Preflight the first line of the post becomes the pin's title and the remaining lines become the description. A one-line post is used for both, and a title set in the Pinterest options replaces the first line. The same pin to three boards is three targets, each with its own board.

Why a scheduler holds the pin

The create call in Pinterest's API v5 has no publish-at field. A tool cannot hand Pinterest a pin and say "publish at 18:00". It keeps the pin and creates it when the time comes, which is why a scheduled pin is not visible in Pinterest's own scheduled list. Pinterest fetches the picture from a link Preflight provides, valid for one hour, so the file is not sent as bytes.

    The boards

A board is chosen per pin and loaded live when you compose, because a board that was renamed or deleted makes the pin fail. The first board is remembered as a fallback. The connection needs permission to write boards as well as pins; it looks odd for publishing, but a pin is written to a board and Pinterest refuses the pin without that scope. An account connected without it is asked to reconnect.

Why a pin can be invisible: access tiers

Pinterest gives apps two levels of API access. Under Trial access, pins and boards made by the app are visible only to their creator, which is fine for testing and useless for an audience. Standard access, which needs a recorded demo of the sign-in flow and a compliant app, is what lets a scheduler publish pins other people can see. If a scheduled pin exists in the account of whoever connected it but nobody sees it, the access level is the first thing to check. Rate limits also differ: pin creation is 300 calls a day per app on Trial and 100 a minute per user on Standard. A normal posting schedule is far below that, and a bulk import is where a 429 appears.

What a tool cannot do on Pinterest

    • Read or answer comments. The API reports the number of comments on a pin, not the comments themselves, so replies are made on Pinterest.
    • Edit a published pin from a scheduler. The API allows it, but Preflight does not offer it, so edit on Pinterest. Deleting works from Preflight.
    • Save other people's pins. The create call is for content you made.
    • Fix a missing permission by retrying. Preflight stops after the first refusal and marks the account as needing reconnection.

Posting the same picture to many boards

Spreading one picture over many boards with identical text is a spam risk, and Pinterest's guidelines do not set a rule on duplicates, so the safe habit is to vary the title and description for each board. Apps built for spam are prohibited, and Pinterest may remove an app at any time, so repetitive mass posting threatens the integration of everyone using it.

    Scheduling it in Preflight

Connect your Pinterest account with Pinterest's own consent screen, pick the board for each target, write the post once for all networks and set a time. The composer checks the 100 and 800 characters, the 500 of alt text and the file against the rules above, and a larger or unreadable file gets a JPEG copy of up to 4,096 pixels on the long side, which the composer announces before anything is sent. Figures per pin are impressions, pin clicks, saves, reactions and comments, up to 90 days back. Pinterest is on every plan, the free one included (see pricing); the integration page with all the permissions is Pinterest scheduler, and the numbers for every network are on the limits table.

    Questions people ask

    Can you schedule Pinterest pins?
Yes. Pinterest's own tool schedules pins for business accounts, and Preflight does it for any connected account by holding the pin and publishing it at the chosen time, because Pinterest's API has no publish-at field. A board and an image are required.
Why does a scheduled Pinterest pin need a board?
Pinterest writes every pin to a board, and the API refuses a pin without a valid one. The board is chosen per target, and the connection also needs permission to write boards.
What is the Pinterest title and description limit?
A pin title shows the first 100 characters and the description holds 800. Alt text can be up to 500 characters.
Why are my scheduled pins visible only to me?
Pins and boards made by an app with Trial access are visible only to their creator. A scheduler needs Standard access, which Pinterest grants after reviewing a demo of the sign-in flow, to publish pins others can see.
Can a scheduler post videos or several images to Pinterest?
The API allows both, but Preflight sends one image per pin and refuses video on a Pinterest target. A post with several pictures is warned about because only the first is sent.

Write it once. Let the rules be our problem.

Preflight checks every post against each network's rules before it leaves, then publishes it to twelve networks. Free plan, no card.
