How many pictures can one post hold? The answer ranges from one to thirty, and the number is only the start: networks also differ on formats, size and whether pictures and video can share a post. This page puts the counts for all twelve of Preflight's networks in one table, taken from the limits Preflight enforces.
How many per post
| Network | Pictures or files per post | Formats | Size each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tumblr | 30 | JPEG, PNG, GIF | 20 MB |
| TikTok photo post | 35 | JPEG, WebP, pulled from a verified host | |
| Threads | 20 | JPEG, PNG | 8 MB |
| 20 | JPEG, PNG, GIF | 10 MB | |
| 20, in a carousel | JPEG | 8 MB | |
| Facebook Pages | 10 | JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF | 10 MB |
| Telegram | 10, as an album | JPEG, PNG, WebP | 10 MB |
| Discord | 10 | JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF | 10 MB |
| 5, as a carousel | JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, TIFF | 20 MB | |
| Bluesky | 4 | JPEG, PNG, WebP | 2 MB after resizing |
| Mastodon | 4 by default; the instance decides | JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC, AVIF | 16 MB by default |
| YouTube | None: a video is the post |
An Instagram carousel can mix pictures and video within its twenty items. A Threads carousel can also mix them. The shortest limit among the networks you send to is the one that matters: ten pictures for Facebook, Telegram or Discord are fine, and Instagram takes up to twenty, but only four go to Bluesky and Mastodon, and the rest are not sent.
Mixing pictures and video
| Network | Pictures and video together |
|---|---|
| Instagram, Threads, Telegram, Discord | Allowed |
| LinkedIn, Mastodon | Refused: one video alone, or pictures |
| Bluesky, TikTok, Facebook | Accepted, but only the first kind is sent |
| Pictures only; video is not posted | |
| Tumblr | One video per post |
The Bluesky, TikTok and Facebook case is the quiet one: a post with a video and three pictures goes out with the pictures missing, or the video missing, depending on which came first. Preflight warns before sending and says what will go.
When pictures are the wrong shape
- Pinterest makes a carousel only from pictures of one shape. If they differ, only the first is sent.
- Instagram takes feed pictures between 3:4 and 1.91:1.
- Threads takes up to 10:1 and resizes to between 320 and 1,440 pixels wide.
- Telegram takes photos whose width plus height is at most 10,000 pixels and a ratio of at most 20:1.
When a file is the wrong type
A picture in a format a network refuses gets a copy made for that network alone, when the copy would be accepted: for example a PNG for Instagram becomes a JPEG. Your original is never changed. A HEIC from an iPhone is converted to JPEG on upload. An animated GIF is never converted, because a still copy would be a different post: it is refused where the network does not take it, and you are told to post it as a video. The per-network pages have the details, for example Instagram picture sizes.
One set of pictures, many networks
Write the post for the strictest network and let the rest take what they can: four pictures, JPEG, under 2 MB each, in a shape between 3:4 and 1.91:1 will pass every network above. The check runs on each network separately as you type, so you see which one objects. Alt text goes with each picture, and the lengths are in the alt text guide.
All twelve networks' limits are on the limits page, and the checker works on every plan, the free one included.
Counts and formats read from Preflight's capability sheet and image rules on 30 October 2026.
