Edit or delete a published post, by network

Which of twelve networks let a scheduler edit, delete, read or reply to a published post: Mastodon and YouTube edit, Instagram only deletes, TikTok neither.

Updated · 3 min read · Prices and limits checked against the vendors' own pages and APIs on that date.

After a scheduler publishes a post, what it can still do depends on the network's API, not on the scheduler. Some networks let a tool edit the text, some only delete, and TikTok neither. This page lists, network by network, what Preflight can do to a published post, and what it can read back, from the capability sheet that also feeds the open dataset.

    What "edit" means

    • Mastodon has a real edit endpoint that keeps the post and its replies. It is the cleanest of the twelve.
    • YouTube accepts a new title, description, tags and category on a published video.
    • Facebook Pages accepts a text change on a published post.
    • Telegram and Discord edit the text or caption of a message the bot or webhook sent; a message with a file has a caption, one without has text.
    • The rest have no edit through the API. To change a post on Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Bluesky or Tumblr you delete it and publish a new one, which loses its likes, comments and reach.

    Details that catch people

    • Instagram delete works only for accounts connected through Facebook login, which is how Preflight connects them, and needs a permission to manage content. It covers posts, reels, stories and whole carousels.
    • TikTok offers no delete and no edit through the publishing API: a post you want gone is removed in the app.
    • Telegram's Bot API reports nothing about how a message performed, not views and not forwards, and cannot read replies.
    • A Discord webhook can write, edit and delete its own messages and nothing else, and a deleted webhook ends all of it.
    • Tumblr cannot be edited through the API, though notes (likes, reblogs, replies) are read back.

    Moderating comments

Where comments can be read, they can be answered. YouTube and Facebook Pages also let a tool hide a comment, which on YouTube means held back from everyone but its author. Mastodon has nothing to hide, since nobody moderates another server's posts, and YouTube's liking and hearting of comments exists only in Studio. A Page may remove anyone's comment from its own post.

Why this matters before you publish

An error you find after publishing can be fixed only where the network allows it, so the checks have to happen before. That is the reason Preflight validates every network's rules while you type: on Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Bluesky and Tumblr there is no later chance, and on TikTok not even a delete. The rules are on the limits page, and the figures each network reports back are in the analytics guide.

    On the free plan

Edit, delete and the comments inbox are included on every plan, the free one included, where the network allows them. The same actions are available over the API.

    Questions people ask

Can I edit a published Instagram post through a scheduler?
No. Instagram's API allows deleting a published post but not editing its caption. To change it, delete the post and publish a new one, which loses its likes and comments.
Which networks let a scheduler edit a published post?
YouTube, Facebook Pages, Mastodon, Telegram and Discord. Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Bluesky, Tumblr and TikTok do not.
Can I delete a TikTok post from a scheduler?
No. TikTok's publishing API has no delete and no edit, so a TikTok post is removed in the app.
Which networks let a scheduler read and reply to comments?
YouTube, Instagram, Facebook Pages, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon allow reading and replying. Tumblr allows reading only. LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Telegram and Discord allow neither.
Why can't I read Telegram or Discord replies?
A Telegram bot cannot read replies and reports no views or forwards. A Discord webhook can only write, edit and delete its own messages, not read the channel.

Write it once. Let the rules be our problem.
