A Pinterest pin has a title of up to 100 characters and a description of up to 800, and it cannot exist without a board and a picture. That shape makes Pinterest the network where a caption written for somewhere else is most likely to go wrong: there is no single text box, and the first line of what you write becomes the title.
Title and description
| Limit | |
|---|---|
| Title | 100 characters; a longer one is cut, not refused |
| Description | 800 characters |
| Alt text | 500 characters |
| Link | One destination URL per pin |
| Board | Required; every pin goes to one board |
Without a title of its own, the first line of the text is the title and the rest is the description. With a title given separately, the whole text is the description. A pin with no title at all goes out as "Untitled Pin", so give one.
Pictures
| Rule | |
|---|---|
| Pictures per pin | 1, or a carousel of 2 to 5 |
| Carousel shape | Every picture needs the same ratio, or only the first is sent |
| Formats | JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP and TIFF |
| Size | 20 MB each |
| Larger pictures | A copy at up to 4,096 pixels on the long side |
| Video | Not posted through Preflight |
A carousel with pictures in different shapes is refused by Pinterest ("images must have the same width/height ratios"), so Preflight warns and sends the first picture alone. A picture's size must be known for the shape check to pass, and one that is not counts as different.
Pinterest pulls each picture from a link Preflight makes for it, which is valid for an hour, so a pin is published while the link is still good.
Boards
A pin cannot be created without a board. If the post names none, Preflight uses the account's first board. An account with no boards cannot take a pin, so a board can be created in the composer or through the API. A board deleted after the post was made refuses the pin with a 404, and the post needs another board.
After publishing
Pinterest reports impressions, pin clicks, saves, reactions and comments, and its analytics reach back at most 90 days. A pin click is someone opening the pin from the grid, not a view, so Preflight keeps Pinterest's own word for it. There are no shares and no reach figures from Pinterest. A published pin cannot be edited through the API.
Pinterest next to the others
Eight hundred characters for the description is well under Instagram's 2,200, and the title is a limit most networks do not have, with YouTube's 100 the nearest. How to connect Pinterest is on the Pinterest integration page, and scheduling is described on how to schedule Pinterest posts. All twelve networks are on the limits page. Pinterest is one channel on any plan, the free one included.
Figures from the Pinterest API v5 and Preflight's adapter, checked 29 October 2026.
Questions people ask
- What is the Pinterest title limit?
- 100 characters. A longer title is cut rather than refused. The first line of your text becomes the title unless you set one separately.
- What is the Pinterest description limit?
- 800 characters. Alt text is limited to 500.
- How many images can a pin have?
- One, or a carousel of 2 to 5 pictures that all have the same shape. With different shapes, only the first picture is sent.

- Yes. Every pin goes to a board. If you name none, the account's first board is used, and an account with no boards cannot take a pin until one is created.
