YouTube is the one network where a scheduler competes with a good native one: YouTube Studio can hold a video until a date. What Studio cannot do is sit in the same queue as the Short's TikTok cut and the Instagram Reel, with one calendar, one approval and one set of checks. Preflight uploads to a channel through the YouTube Data API, with the metadata Studio offers, and tells you before the upload what YouTube would do to it afterwards.

What goes out
A YouTube post is one video; pictures are refused, and a post with no file never leaves. The title is the first line of the text unless you set one, the rest is the description, and both can be written separately for YouTube while the same post carries a shorter caption elsewhere. Alongside them: tags, a playlist, privacy (public, unlisted or private), a custom thumbnail, caption tracks, the made-for-kids flag, and a Short switch that adds #Shorts to the description. A vertical or square video of up to three minutes is what YouTube files as a Short; the switch does not make a longer one into one, and the check says so.
You can also hand the date to YouTube itself. With scheduling on YouTube turned on, the video uploads at once as private and YouTube flips it public at the time you chose, so the premiere is YouTube's clock rather than ours. That works only for a video going public; an unlisted or private one is uploaded at the scheduled time instead, and the composer warns you which it will be.
Connecting a channel
Connect with Google. Preflight asks for three scopes: upload, the read-write scope that edits and deletes a video it published and reads the channel, and read-only analytics for views, watch time and retention. Every channel the Google account manages can be picked at the consent screen. An unverified channel is held to 15-minute videos by YouTube; verified, the limit is 12 hours.
What is checked before upload
The rules in /limits/youtube-shorts, run on every post: the title is cut at 100 characters and you are told; the description is measured in bytes against 5,000, which accented letters double; a < or > in either is refused outright, because YouTube refuses it; over 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores every hashtag on the video, so you are warned at the count; tags are fitted into YouTube's 500-character budget and the ones that would be dropped are named; a playlist must be one of the channel's own; caption tracks are checked for a language and a file. The video is checked against 256 GB and 12 hours.
The quota
The Data API gives an app a daily allowance, and an upload is the most expensive call there is. When YouTube answers that the app's allowance or the channel's own daily upload limit is used up, the post is not failed: it is held and retried five minutes after midnight Pacific time, when both reset, and the post's row says exactly that. A rate-limit answer waits 15 minutes.
What the API will not do
Nothing is off the table here that matters. A video Preflight published can be edited (title, description, tags, privacy) and deleted from the dashboard; comments are read and answered, and a comment can be hidden, which YouTube calls rejecting it; your own replies can be deleted, somebody else's comment cannot be, only moderated; liking a comment exists only in Studio. Retention and traffic sources are read for the analytics screen, which is why the third scope is asked for. All of it is in the API and the MCP server as well as the app, on every plan including the free one at pricing.
Questions people ask
- Can Preflight schedule YouTube Shorts?
- Yes. A vertical or square video of up to three minutes is published as a Short; the Short switch adds #Shorts to the description, and the composer warns when the video is too long to count as one.
- Why did my YouTube upload wait until the next day?
- YouTube answered that the daily upload allowance, either the app's or the channel's own, was used up. Preflight holds the video and uploads it five minutes after midnight Pacific time, when the quota resets.
- Does Preflight use YouTube's own scheduling?
- It can. With scheduling on YouTube enabled, the video is uploaded straight away as private and YouTube makes it public at your time. That only works for public videos; unlisted and private ones are uploaded at the scheduled time instead.
