Schedule YouTube Shorts: Studio, phone and API

Schedule a Short in YouTube Studio with Visibility set to Schedule, or by API with a publish time. What changes a Short, how to edit it, why it stays private.

You can schedule a YouTube Short in YouTube Studio the way you schedule any video: in the upload's Visibility step choose Schedule, then set the date, time and time zone. YouTube's help has no separate scheduler for Shorts and no Shorts-only rule, so what decides whether a video is a Short is its shape and length, not how it was scheduled. Through the YouTube Data API a tool can schedule too, with a publish time on a private upload. This page covers both, the limits that apply, and what makes a scheduled video fail to go public.

How to schedule a YouTube Short in Studio

    1. In YouTube Studio click Create, then Upload videos, and choose the file.
    2. Fill in the details and continue to the Visibility step.
    3. Click the Schedule card, then set the date, the time and the time zone.
    4. Click Schedule.

To change a scheduled video later, the video has to be private: open it, choose Edit draft, then Schedule again. A Community Guidelines strike makes a scheduled video stay private, and it has to be scheduled again. The help page does not state how far ahead you can schedule, so this page does not give a number.

What makes a video a Short

A Short is a vertical or square video of up to 3 minutes. The video's length and shape decide it, and a #Shorts hashtag does not change that; see YouTube Shorts limits. That is why the same vertical clip can go to Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels from one calendar: see one vertical video for Reels, Shorts and TikTok.

Scheduling a Short through the API

Through the Data API a tool has two ways to schedule, and they behave differently.

    • YouTube's clock. The video is uploaded as private ahead of time with a publish time set, and YouTube itself makes it public at that time. The API's videos.insert accepts a publish time in the status of the video.
    • The tool's clock. The tool holds the file and uploads at the time you chose. Preflight uses this for unlisted and private videos and for any time close to now.

Preflight uses YouTube's clock for public videos, so the video goes live at the minute even if Preflight is busy, and its own clock for the rest. The upload limits are 100 uploads a day for the whole app, shared by its users, 100 characters for a title and 5,000 bytes for a description; see scheduling to YouTube and the YouTube limits.

Why a scheduled Short does not go public

    • A strike or a block. The video stays private and must be scheduled again.
    • An invalid publish time. The API answers invalidPublishAt for a time it cannot accept.
    • A file YouTube rejects. Length, size or format; the composer checks these before upload.
    • A reconnect needed. The tool can only upload if its connection to the channel is still valid.

Scheduling a Short from Preflight works on every plan, the free one included.

YouTube Help (scheduling a video) and the Data API videos.insert reference, read on 31 October 2026. The help page gives no maximum scheduling window.
