The Instagram Graph API has no field for a publish time. None of the publishing endpoints takes one, and scheduled_publish_time, which people look for, is a Facebook Page feature and not an Instagram one. So every Instagram scheduler, Preflight included, keeps the post itself and calls the API at the minute you chose. This page explains what that means for anyone building their own scheduler or choosing a tool.
What the API does offer
Publishing is two calls: create a media container, then call media_publish. The container can be created ahead of time, but it expires after 24 hours, so it cannot be used to hold a post for next week. The only thing the API gives you is "publish now", so any delay is yours to build.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is there a publish-time parameter? | No |
Is scheduled_publish_time available for Instagram? | No, it belongs to Facebook Pages |
| Can I create the container a week early? | No, it expires after 24 hours |
| What has to be stored? | The file and the caption, not the container |
| What triggers the post? | Your own timer calling the API |
What a scheduler has to do
- Store the media and the caption until the time comes, and not rely on a container.
- Create the container shortly before the minute, wait for it to finish processing (a video takes longer), then publish.
- Check the token at that moment. A token that expired since the post was scheduled makes the post fail then and not at scheduling time.
- Respect the daily cap of 100 publishes in 24 hours, by waiting and retrying when it is reached (the rate limit).
- Report the result, including the error code when Instagram refuses (the error codes).
Pictures are not uploaded to Instagram either: the API fetches them from a URL the tool provides, so the tool hosts the file for the minute it takes.
The app's own scheduler is separate
Instagram schedules posts itself, from a public account in the app, up to 30 days ahead and 25 posts a day. That is a feature of the app. It is not exposed through the API, which is why the app's scheduled posts do not appear in a tool and a tool's posts do not appear in the app's list. The routes are compared in scheduling Instagram posts on desktop and scheduling Reels.
In Preflight
Write the post once, tick Instagram and choose a minute or the next free queue slot. The post is checked while you type and held until the time, and the same schedule can be created with the API or from an AI assistant over MCP. The full flow is in publishing to Instagram through the API.
Based on Meta's publishing guide and the media_publish reference, which mention no scheduling for Instagram, and on Preflight's own behaviour, checked 2 November 2026.
Questions people ask
- Can the Instagram API schedule a post?
- No. None of the Instagram publishing endpoints takes a publish time. A scheduler stores the post and calls the API at the chosen minute.
- Does Instagram have scheduled_publish_time?
- Not for Instagram. scheduled_publish_time is a Facebook Page feature. Instagram publishing is immediate.
- Why can't I create the container a week in advance?
- A container expires after 24 hours, so it cannot hold a post for later. Store the file and caption instead and create the container near the time.
- Do posts scheduled in the Instagram app appear in a scheduling tool?
- No. The app's scheduler is not exposed through the API, so the two lists are separate.
